Once, while in the throes of a Sunday morning hangover, I agreed to go to a Dallas Desperados football game with a friend. To me, football has always been a game where it took a bunch of guys in white pants about 20 minutes to move four yards—hardly a spectator sport. Before that, I had attended a handful of hockey games, and my friend was a soccer man, so we didn’t really go into this experience as avid fans. Needless to say, though, I became a convert. I think arena football was invented for people like me—girls who just don’t have the attention span for American football. People who only watch the Super Bowl to catch the commercials. But here’s all you need to know: The field is only 50 yards long, the sidelines are made of 48-inch-tall high-density foam rubber (just watch those boys bounce around) and the players actually score. A lot. It’s fast-paced, action-packed, old-fashioned fun. And since people other than celebrities and billionaires can afford the sideline seats, you know that everyone is there to have a good time.
