Around the world they called it The Incredible Trip in a Crazy Airplane and Tighten Your Seat Belts…The Pilot Is Gone!, but here in America we needed just one word and one big punctuation mark to name the greatest disaster comedy of all time. Airplane! turns 30 this year, and for every classic punchline like, “I am serious, and don’t call me Shirley,” there’s an equally dated reference to Gerald Ford or Hare Krishnas. Go ahead, try making a joke about flying, but know that if it’s worth telling, Airplane! probably got there first. It’s also the third selection in Central 214’s summer Sunday night screenings out on the restaurant’s new patio–maybe a fancier setting than the movie ever deserved, but as you work your way through a late dinner watching the plane’s passengers writhe and sweat (hilariously) through the effects of their rancid in-flight fish dinner, you’ll be all the more thankful for chef Blythe Beck’s deft hand in the kitchen. Admission is free to the courtyard for the movie, and they’ll be serving up food and drink specials all night.
