When we’re in the mood to munch, we love to snack on our beloved Fig Newtons. But we’re a little hesitant to try the purple, squishy, turnip-shaped fruit in its pure form, even after years of watching our mother pop them whole into her mouth straight from the tree in our backyard. And for others like me, who have no idea what to do with the fruit, the Central Market Cooking School Staff is hosting an Iron Chef-like cooking class, incorporating figs into a five-course meal as the featured ingredient. For $60 per person, conquer your fig fears from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Central Market, 5750 E. Lovers Lane. To register, visit centralmarket.com/cooking-school.aspx.

Will you step up to support Dallas Observer this year?
At the Dallas Observer, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $14,000 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $30,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of the Dallas Observer, now’s the time to give back.
