Forget Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers and the Jigsaw Killer. (OK, don’t forget them—they could be behind you RIGHT NOW.) What truly chills us is the brutality of the animal world. While most humans use tools to maim and murder, many animals are faster and stronger than us and possess razor-like claws and talons, onboard poisons, and sharp, pointy teeth. And run as fast as you can, little biped, because some animals can fly. In a film such as Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds, it’s the unpredictability and mindless aggression of avians that terrorize a seaside town. While The Birds isn’t your typical gorefest, focusing instead on the inexplicable wildness that hovers at the edges of our manufactured civilization, there is some good eye-gouging fun to be had.
