An award-winning science fiction children’s book is now a play to be performed on one of America finest stages. No plane tickets to Chicago or New York needed, just a family outing to Dallas Children’s Theater to catch Lois Lowry’s The Giver starting Friday. This Newbury-winning first part of Lowry’s trilogy has been on middle school reading lists—and banned book lists—since 1994 because of its allegorical swipe at “Utopian” societies. It may not be “easy being green,” but The Giver‘s 12-year-old Receiver of Memory, Jonas, would applaud Kermit’s freedom of expression and share his pain. The Giver is about looking beyond our immediate discomforts to the big picture—where every odd characteristic, emotion and talent is a rewarding part of the mix.
