Heat, Wind and Rain

Photographer Kent Barker seems rather taken with the process of erosion–“There is a solitude and a quiet that for me is conducive to the act of ‘seeing’ and a unique visual beauty in the way that time and weather acts upon objects,” he says. Barker finds such beauty in the small, dusty corners of Texas and New Mexico he’s stumbled into while road-tripping between Taos and Dallas, where he uses a process known as high dynamic range imaging to combine several exposures, creating a more dynamic photograph of say, an old mailbox or a rusty stovetop. Remnants, a new exhibit at the Magnolia Gallery, collects several of these images and will be on display through September 10; an opening reception with Barker takes place from 8 to 10 p.m. Thursday in the gallery, located in the bar of the Magnolia Theatre in the West Village.
