$10,000

I don’t tell a lot of people this, but paddling is a secret desire of mine. I fantasize about it quite often–the broad, flat paddle finding its mark over and over again, swiftly propelling me through a sweaty but satisfying adventure. Yes, a good canoe outing is an absolute pleasure. Well, excepting bugs, sun, portage, bailing and tipping. Never fear, canoe virgins, the Heard Science Museum’s new EcoAdventures program will introduce you to the necessary equipment and maneuvers to have a safe and gratifying paddling experience as you explore their Wetland Canoe Trail, 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. One hour of instruction will be followed by a two-hour canoe trip through the Heard’s 60-acre wetlands. The Heard is located at 1 Nature Place in McKinney. Price is $30 to $40 per person, and space is limited. Call 972-562-5566 ext. 237 or visit heardmuseum.org.

Sat., Sept. 26, 9 a.m.-noon, 2009
