In the annals of horror films, so much of it targets multiple levels. In all the blood and gore and one-dimensional sexuality and gotcha moments, there lies a social commentary that tears the movies away from the stunts, making it truly scary. And then there are the ones that don’t even need any stunts — just unending bleakness. Rosemary’s Baby is the latter — light on blood and guts, but heavy on the macabre, it features Mia Farrow as a young wife pregnant with her first child. She and her husband have planned the pregnancy, though she was not conscious when the child was conceived (red flag number one), then she begins to suspect that there’s something seriously wrong with her baby. The involvement of her aggressively nosy neighbors leads her to a paranoid state that culminates in a discovery so horrible, so terrifying, that she has no choice but to … accept it? Rosemary’s Baby is a slow burn, and a singularly petrifying piece of cinema that’ll scare the bejesus out of you.
