People spend a lot of time trying to be the best at things. People also spend a lot of time failing at that and end up making mediocre drivel. Take Freebirds vs. Chipotle burritos. Freebirds is awesome, and Chipotle a distant runner-up. Or The Baby-sitter’s Club vs. Sweet Valley High. BSC wins, hands down, leaving those dipshit Sweet Valley girls in the dust. Sadly, it’s pretty damned hard to reach the level of superlative goodness that is “best.” Nowhere is that gap more evident than between the 1958 science fiction, um, “movie” Plan 9 From Outer Space and…every other movie ever made. Google Plan 9, and you’ll find a lot of Web sites calling it the worst movie ever. These vicious accusations are borne of pure jealousy and nothing more. Director Ed Wood Jr.’s vision of a troubled future is a powerful message for today’s troubled times. Aliens come to earth to prevent humans from developing a giant bomb that’ll wipe out the whole culture. The only way to get the humans’ attention? Turn the dead into zombies, of course.
