There’s no question as to whether we love our local artists and what they do here, but any community risks becoming insular and myopic without exposure to the movements and ideas cropping daily outside our own heads. For those of us who believe in Dallas – underground, grassroots, outsider Dallas – becoming a real and symbiotic part of an interconnected, international arts community is as much a matter of importing culture as it is exporting the city’s own burgeoning work.
Which is exactly why we were particularly excited by the news that Israeli-born video artist Omer Fast will be speaking at the DMA on July 19 regarding his current exhibition, 5000 Feet Is the Best, part of the 2011 Venice Biennale, and recently installed at the DMA.
Fast first secured his position as one of the country’s most intriguing video artists when his film, The Casting (2007), was shown as part of the 2008 Whitney Biennial. This comprehensive and thoughtful review from Frieze Magazine will help bring you up to speed in advance of Fast’s Dallas appearance.
