John Steinbeck once said that he was doing his “damndest to rip a reader’s nerves to rags” while writing his classic The Grapes of Wrath. If you’ve spent any time with that tome at all, you know the son of a gun succeeded: He eased you in with droughts and foreclosures and then rolled through dead dogs, dead grandpas, dead grandmas, dead preachers, mental breakdowns … and dead babies. Thing about The Grapes of Wrath is, it’s a sad affair. There’s no getting around it. But it’s also a stirring testament to the power of family and a paean to the human ability to slog through the worst kind of shit and still keep l-i-v-i-n, you know? So, yes, focus on the uplift and light through all that Dust Bowl dark during the WaterTower Theatre’s adaptation of this Tony-winner at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
