Monterey has long been associated with music. To many it is because of a pop festival, but perhaps to more it is associated with jazz. Celebrating half a century of jazz affiliation, the Monterey Jazz Festival’s 50th Anniversary Band will perform two Texas dates, including one at McFarlin Auditorium. The band includes pianist Benny Green, trumpeter Terence Blanchard, saxophonist James Moody, bassist Derrick Hodge and drummer Kendrick Scott. Nnenna Freelon will be a featured vocalist for the group. The show features a selection of standards and favorites from all eras of jazz—including songs from Tin Pan Alley, bebop and modern eras—in a deliberate effort to deliver a full picture of the genre’s history 8 p.m. Friday at McFarlin Auditorium. Tickets are $14 to $59. Call 214-528-5576 or 1-888-240-ARTS. Visit titas.org or montereyjazzfestival.org for more information.

Fri., Feb. 1, 8 p.m., 2008
