Of the works by the three founding members of 1962’s Panic Movement, those of author/illustrator Roland Topor have generally been eclipsed by that of his co-conspirators Alejandro Jodorowsky and Fernando Arrabal. Cinephiles may be vaguely familiar with Topor via Roman Polanski, who based The Tenant on Topor’s novel Le Locataire chimérique, but he’s probably best known for a trio of collaborations with French animator René Laloux in the late ’60s and early ’70s. The most famous of these is their surreal sci-fi masterpiece La Planète Sauvage, aka Fantastic Planet, the 973 Cannes Grand Prix winner ironically released in the States by exploitation kingpin Roger Corman. Oak Cliff’s Texas Theatre (231 W. Jefferson Blvd.) has somehow gotten their emulsion-stained hands on a 35mm print of Fantastic Planet and will be hosting a one-shot screening of the psychedelic allegory at 8 p.m. Saturday. If that’s not enough mind-melting heaviness for one evening, True Widow, Mountains of Smoke, and Mannequins with Kill Appeal will play after the movie while DeeJay George Quartz loiters near the restrooms all night. Tickets are $10.50 for the movie/$8 for music /$17 for movie + music. More information is available at thetexastheatre.com.
