Dallas native Lawrence Lee has more to worry about than creating captivating works of art from graphite, ink and tea stains. He’s got the good people of his created world to save. According to Lee, “seven immortal defenders” (the stars of his pieces) are responsible for protecting the less brave and strong, but recently one gave up the heroic life for mortal love. Isn’t that always the way? Since then, self-sacrificing mortal Lorenzo Bek has stepped in and volunteers his efforts in place of the “fallen defender”–all the while making his public debut in Lee’s exhibition New Drawings at Barry Whistler Gallery through October 24. Though one generally considers ink and graphite as means to write a story, Lee uses them to draw one over the course of his new collection. Will the Defenders in these new drawings bring their people peace, or will corruption win? The gallery is located at 2909B Canton St., and hours are noon to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays. Call 214-939-0242, or visit barrywhistlergallery.com.

Wednesdays-Sundays. Starts: Sept. 19. Continues through Oct. 24, 2009
