Dallas native, bon vivant and man of letters Rawlins Gilliland is perhaps most widely known locally (and nationally) for his role as commentator on National Public Radio affiliate KERA. Frequently, Gilliland’s soothing voice can be heard on shows such as Morning Edition and All Things Considered offering revealing, inspiring and touching insight on issues ranging from “God Bless eBay” to “Defining Love and Marriage” to “A Verbal Mongoose Guide to Bullies and Bores.” A poet and natural storyteller, Gilliland won a Master Poet grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1976. From 7 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday, in what’s being billed as his first-ever solo show, Gilliland will share his “verbal memoirs” at Sons of Hermann Hall (3414 Elm St.). The chance to hear his autobiographical tales backed by a jazz trio for “Rated [R]awlins” proved very popular — the event is sold out, but it has a wait list.
