In his new book, Mayflower, acclaimed historian Nathaniel Philbrick explains how the first 50 years of settlement at Plymouth in essence defined America and its subsequent push westward. The book’s subtitle, A Voyage to War, is fitting as Philbrick dispenses with the elementary-school version of the pilgrims’ landing in America to reveal the truth: the Mayflower was a battered, leaky ship; the Native Wampanoag, who were eventually obliterated, were hardly the accommodating Thanksgiving Day guests they have been painted; and surviving the harsh, unforgiving New England climate was anything but pleasant, cheery nights in front of the fire (half the pilgrims died the first winter). Philbrick will speak about the book Monday at the Highland Park United Methodist Church, 3300 Mockingbird Lane.
