Last month, for the sixth consecutive year, Americans lost the Indianapolis 500, and to a Scotsman no less. Racing has become more international, and we may no longer have the competitive edge in such endeavors as international high-performance racing, but that’s no reason to nix all racing events, is it? The aptly named Texas Vs. The World, hosted by Houston Outlaw Racing, pits our homegrown hodgepodge of racers against one another in modified cars for big prizes. The mods aren’t gimmicks a la Hanna-Barbera’s Wacky Races. These are souped-up cars made for rough and ready racing. The event isn’t for the faint of heart, nor is it for the light on cash. It includes a series of winner-takes-all Gambler’s races that cost $500 to enter. The racers start their tricked-out engines Friday through Saturday at the Dallas Raceway, 8055 W.
