Imagine if Spinal Tap evolved from a fictional band into a real band. That’s not too far from what happened to The Porcupine Tree. The band started as a joke between Steven Wilson and his friend Malcolm Stocks. They made up an elaborate history, complete with discography, for a legendary ’70s band which never existed. Wilson even recorded several hours of music to go along with the story. He later released the best of the recordings in 1989 on a cassette entitled Tarquin’s Seaweed Farm. Somewhere along the line The Prickly Conifers became a “real band.” They are currently doing a six-month tour to promote their ninth album, Fear of a Blank Planet. No, seriously.
