I went to a high school that was very into dance. Dance concerts seemed to happen every other day, and girls with excellent posture and purposeful strides abounded. It was part of my education, to be sure, and I graduated knowing plenty about the world of dance. The name Alvin Ailey (a Texas native) is known to many. He and his company, The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, have been influential and important in not only American modern dance, but internationally. Ailey died in 1989, yet the company lives on and thrives under the able direction of Judith Jamison, continuing Ailey’s mission by presenting important works of the past and adding new ones to the repertoire. Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is celebrating 50 years of bringing African-American culture and American modern dance to the world and is coming to our neck of the woods to do so, performing at the Bass Performance Hall, Fourth and Calhoun streets in Fort Worth, at 7:30 p.m. this Tuesday and Wednesday.
