The National Space Society of Texas isn’t all about data crunching and calibrations: It also has a soft spot for poetry.
The organization is holding a poetry contest that anyone can enter, if you love the red planet. Or lust after it enough to scribble down prose on the topic Mars: The Next Frontier, Exploration and Settlement of Space.
Perhaps you can approach it as a love story of two unassuming rovers named Spirit and Opportunity, who while in search of water instead found romance. Their joy lasted longer than the world could ever have predicted, until things got too real for Spirit, causing him to shut down, emotionally. Opportunity has been forced to roam alone ever since. (Hang on, little robot. Curiosity will be there in a couple of weeks, and he’s quite a looker.)
There isn’t a lot of cash on the line: First place takes home $50, Second $25 and Third gets $15. But your heart will feel like it’s entered zero gravity after getting all of those tangled, human emotions ironed out on paper. Entry deadline is July 31, 2012.
