When I lived in Nashville, my girlfriend and I ran out of stuff to do. Sometimes we’d just drive around town literally looking for something—anything—to occupy our time for the evening, and all too often we’d wind up at the one independent movie house watching some foreign film about an autistic French girl who weaves baskets for her inattentive lover who is something of an equestrian. Now here I am in Dallas, where dating activities abound like leased Lexuses in North Dallas, but the girlfriend lives in Baltimore, and oh, by the way, she’s not the girlfriend anymore. Actually, she’s married and pregnant. Not good times. But if she were here and she were not married or pregnant, we’d have no shortage of things to do this coming weekend. Our top choice would probably be the First Annual Wine Squared Festival in the charming confines of downtown Denton. Tasting tickets are $20 and include a glass, a wine diary and a gift bag. There will also be beer. If I reflect enough upon the circumstance of why my girlfriend is my ex-girlfriend, I may head down there myself. Alone. Perhaps someone will weave me a basket.
