Are you willing to die for what you believe in? French composer Francis Poulenc explores this wrenching question, grappling with sacrifice through the eyes of the martyr, in his opera Dialogues of the Carmelites. Based on a true story, Dialogues begins at the close of the French Revolution and the unleashing of the Reign of Terror, a bloody campaign to eradicate counterrevolutionary elements. The Terror snares 16 nuns from the Monastery of the Incarnation of Compiègne, who are imprisoned for refusing to cease practicing their faith. The nuns are guillotined in 1794 as they sing hymns.
