The Saturday after Christmas marks the beginning of Kwanzaa, the seven-day celebration of African culture and community celebrated since 1966. With each day commemorating a different principle–Umoja (unity), Kujichagulia (self-determination), Ujima (collective work and responsibility), Ujamaa (cooperative economics), Nia (purpose), Kuumba (creativity) and Imani (faith)–Kwanzaa serves as a yearly recommitment to the causes of the African-American community. This year TBAAL will host Kwanzaa 2009–Celebrating Hope and Unity in the Community, a Kwanzaa-opening celebration benefiting the North Texas Food Bank and Cedar Hill Food Pantry. The celebration begins at 7 p.m. Saturday in Room T-314 of the Dallas Convention Center Theater Complex (located at the corner of Canton and Akard streets) and will feature poetry, music, dance and food.
