Open Wide For Sedaris

Of the visits humorist and satirist David Sedaris has made to Dallas, two of my favorites include the times I happily waited in an extremely long line for a few moments of chat with the man himself. Of course, his reading of new, unpublished material was thrilling, as was his working the goods on a classic story or two. But the real excitement came as we discussed my fake tooth (and fake teeth, in general), the pros and cons of social smoking and later, as he doodled an elephant on the title page of my book. Sedaris’ forte is finding the humor and emotion in random normal, seemingly boring real life. He’s like a prospector of golden life nuggets. To hear his iconic voice regale us with new gems that focus on the shit that happens when you’re alive is an experience that somehow makes said shit easier to deal with, laugh at. And, it helps that his sincerity is unquestionable — so much so, I never once assumed that elephant drawing was a fat joke (a huge accomplishment).
