Oh, allegory is the most useful of linguistic tools, keeping us from living in a world of painfully concrete Brady Bunch-esque revelations that beat us over the head with the lesson of the day. It’s so much more entertaining to unwrap life lessons one metaphor at a time, and playwright Rajiv Joseph does this painstakingly in Gruesome Playground Injuries, using a host of injuries between a pair of friends to illustrate their increasingly complex connection to each other. Second Thought Theatre brings the tale of Kayleen and Doug to life, spanning 30 years’ worth of physical affliction and emotional revelation under the direction of Joel Ferrell, Dallas Theater Center associate artistic director. The dark comedy never feels like a heavy-handed ball of allegory (paging Herman Melville), using an appropriately antiseptic set and straightforward style to reveal the very definition of “walking wounded.” See exactly how much love hurts during a preview performance at Kalita Humphreys Theater, 3636 Turtle Creek Blvd., at 8 p.m. Friday.
