Everyone knows that the main reason to keep a rodent as a pet is to have fodder for cute or funny YouTube videos. Just take a look at “Hamster on a Piano” or “Dramatic Chipmunk”–being in the presence of rodents often leads to hilarity. And that’s why you should take part in–or at least attend–Petco’s Hamster Ball Derby. Hamsters, along with gerbils, mice and rats, will race for fantastic prizes, mostly consisting of things to eat or chew on. But the hamsters aren’t in it for the prizes; they’re in it for the spirit of competition, the glory and the chance to roll around unfettered inside a large plastic ball. (Everyone should feel that at least once in life–just ask Wayne Coyne.) Registration and practice rounds for the Hamster Ball Derby begin at 1:30 p.m. Saturday and races begin at 2 p.m. Participants must bring their own appropriately sized ball for their pet. Visit petco.com for more details, including locations, training tips and a 20 percent off coupon for a five- or seven-inch hamster ball.
