When I was a kid, Mom would sometimes insist that I go grocery shopping with her. Since she wasn’t big on impulse buys, there was little excitement to these outings, and I avoided them six days of the week—Saturdays were the exception. The best thing about Saturdays (besides the cartoons)? Two words: free food. Rushing around the store, I couldn’t wait to turn the corner and discover the next sample. Li’l Smokeys on a toothpick were always a favorite, as were the treats handed to me in mini-cupcake liners. A Ritz cracker with some surprise spread—might either taste like drops of heaven or a pile of poo—could be a deal-breaker, but I was willing to take the risk. Thanks to Whole Foods’ Spring Fling, though, the risk is gone now. Enjoy free samples of the new spring flavors and smile, knowing that you can impulsively buy whatever you like now. Spring Fling takes place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at all area Whole Foods locations. Visit wholefoodsmarket.com.
Wed., April 5, 5-8 p.m.
