Neil Simon wrote Barefoot in the Park, his second play and first hit, with inspiration from his early days of marriage. From the get-go, Corie and Paul Bratter, the play’s newlyweds, hit trouble setting up their first apartment–a minuscule fifth-floor walkup in a downtown Manhattan brownstone. The heat is on the fritz, the skylight has a gaping hole, their neighbor is a kook, and Corie and Paul must still adjust to married life. In 1967, Simon even turned Barefoot in the Park into a screenplay for a film starring Robert Redford. The play runs through Saturday, February 27, at the Artisan Center Theatre, 418 E.
