1961 was a great year for wine. 1983 saw major advances in medical science, including the discovery of the AIDS virus. And 2013—well, it was a banner year for celebrity babies (North West, y’all!). Some years, the planets align and good things happen in clusters. Way back in 1939, good fortune congregated and rained down upon Hollywood, making that year the most golden of the golden years of film. Movies released in 1939 included “The Wizard of Oz”, “Gone With the Wind”, “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington”, “Stagecoach”, “Goodbye Mr. Chips”, and “Wuthering Heights”. It was a veritable Oscar-fest at the theater every week—movie-goers actually had to go out of their way to see a crappy movie. The Class of ’39 Film Series at the Texas Theatre, 231 West Jefferson, celebrates the cinematic offerings of that year with screenings of several films, including The Wizard of Oz, arguably the most influential of them all. See a beautiful 35mm print of the fantastically trippy L. Frank Baum adaptation presented by the Art Deco Society of Dallas at 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
