How many plays does it take to call a series of shows a festival? Or is it simply the label that makes it so? Whatever the answer, the words “New Play Festival” always make me pretty happy when I see them on a Dallas playbill. This year, Soul Rep Theatre Company kicks off its season at Margo Jones Theatre (1121 First Ave) in Fair Park by presenting four brand new works. The plays include Breakfast by Yusef Miller, Wonderful World by Jonathan Norton, The Ballad of Jane Elkins by Anyika McMillan-Herod, and When Going Green Goes (#%@!) by Guinea Bennett-Price and Keith Price. You’ve got one weekend to see the shows, which kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Tickets are $20 and available at soulreptheatere.com.

Fridays-Sundays, 8 p.m. Starts: Aug. 1. Continues through Aug. 3, 2014
