Of all the laws on the books in this great land of ours, one of the more patently hilarious is Public Law 91-443, enacted under the 91st Congress in 1970. We think about that time in the early 70s and we know that our government had its hands full with Cambodia, Vietnam, Kent State, civil rights issues, Pentagon Papers, you name it. And yet the 91st Congress managed to poke its head out from underneath all those weighty issues and pass that law—the one that established National Clown Week. Richard Nixon (perfect!) signed off on it and so, it has been decreed that the first week of August every year is National Clown Week. And since we’re all patriotic and law-abiding citizens, we’ll need to put our best clown-shoe forward and support our jovial and sometimes terrifying friends as they perform in the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus Wednesday, August 1, 7:30 p.m. at the American Airlines Center, 2500 Victory Avenue. If you have an aversion to clowns, you can hide your eyes and check out the non-codified events, including amazing animals, crazy acrobatics and all manner of death-defying stuntery. Get your tickets (which range from $15 to $100) online at ticketmaster.com. Everything will be packed up into one, tiny car and driven away after August 19. Visit ringling.com for full tour schedule.
Wed., Aug. 1, 7:30 p.m., 2012
