The Dallas Symphony Orchestra opens the new year with a deep program that includes Rachmaninoff’s final composition for piano and orchestra, the riveting Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. Newly appointed artist-in-residence, Conrad Tao — a prodigious pianist, violinist and composer — is set to bring the virtuosic concerto to life. In remembrance of director Eduardo Mata on the 20th anniversary of his death, a performance of Carlos Chávez’s Sinfonia India will begin the evening, with Dvorak’s Symphony No. 7 closing. In between, Dallas will be treated to its premiere performance of composer Mason Bates’ ambitious tone poem, Liquid Interface, an electronically accented, boundary-stretching orchestral work that combines symphonic richness with avant-garde flourishes. The first performance is at 7:30 pm Thursday, with performances at the same time through January 10 and at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 11 at the Meyerson Symphony Center (2301 Flora St).
