When the usual spate of sub-par horror movies clog theaters in the weeks leading up to Halloween (Saw 36, anyone?), there’s a certain comfort in knowing the classics will never die. Such is the case during Hitchcocktober, a month-long celebration of Alfred Hitchcock, the unmatched master of on-screen suspense, dread and misdirection. Hitchcocktober is a standing tradition at the Angelika Film Center, with free screenings every Thursday night during the month of October. This week’s selection is the Oscar-nominated Rear Window, starring James Stewart and pre-princess Grace Kelly. Stewart’s Jeffries, who’s confined to a wheelchair in his apartment, has nothing better to do than spy on his neighbors. Jeffries thinks he witnessed a murder. If you’ve never seen more of Hitchcock’s oeuvre than Psycho, now’s the time, young grasshopper. Watch Rear Window Thursday at the Angelika at Mockingbird Station, 5321 E. Mockingbird Lane. The free screening will be held at 8 p.m. on the outdoor mezzanine. Upcoming showings include Strangers on a Train and North by Northwest. For more information call 214-841-4713 or visit angelikafilmcenter.com.
