Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones’ The Fantasticks currently holds the record for the longest-running musical in history and, much like your grandparents’ love life, after 54 years and thousands of performances the occasional bout of ennui is inevitable. In an attempt to spice things up a little, The Nebraska Theatre Caravan has dressed the beloved classic in retro-futurist fetish gear for their new steampunk adaptation, presented in partnership with the UT Dallas School of Arts & Humanities Thursday through Sunday at Richardson’s Eisemann Center (2351 Performance Drive). What that will entail for a show that previously featured no machines of any kind is unclear, but the preview video features the requisite top hat and aviator goggles combo, a robotic dragon and two Burning Man refugees whipping a man in a monkey costume. If that doesn’t do the trick, there are always the iconic songs and the timeless parable of love triumphing over adversity to fall back on.
