The Tarahumara, an intensely private people, live deep within the canyons of the Sierra Madre Occidental in northern Mexico. Not much has changed since the Tarahumara moved to the remote area in the 16th century to escape the Spaniards. One thing that did change disturbed ethnologist Santiago James Barnaby. He persuaded the Tarahumara to reintroduce a forgotten traditional mask into a ritual dance. The Mystery of the Mask documents the re-integration of the mask through photography, film and sculpture by Kitty Alice Snead, Bill Faulkner and Valery Guignon. A reception for the artists will be held Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. The free exhibit runs daily through October 30 at the Janette Kennedy Gallery at South Side on Lamar, 1409 S.
