We think we have Christmas and Thanksgiving and Hanukkah totally down, after centuries of tradition and decades of power shopping. But truthfully, our holidays are relatively tame. Depending on the subject of the celebration, we worship (or tune into the appropriate parade), we eat and we pass out on the couch as football or Chevy Chase blares in the background. It’s fun, but it’s still somehow anticlimactic. But the Hare Krishnas know how to party, having had somewhere in the neighborhood of 5,000 years to craft the perfect celebration to commemorate the appearance of Lord Krishna, per the Vedic tradition. First of all, you don’t have to be a Hare Krishna to enjoy the sights and sounds of the Sri Krsna Janmastami festival at the Sri Sri Madha Kalachandji Mandir Hare Krishna Temple (5430 Gurley Ave.). Second, the food is delicious, nutritious, vegetarian and free for you to feast on. Third, there is so much dancing and singing, there’s zero possibility you’ll fall asleep before the special midnight service. And finally — Chevy Chase is banned. Unless he wants to come and have a pappadam. Nosh, dance, sing and enjoy getting to know one of East Dallas’ most colorful communities on Thursday from 5 p.m. until 1 a.m. Visit radhakalachandji.com for more information.
