Touchin’ It

There are some words that just sound dirty, no matter what, even if they’re not actually dirty words. Like “ficus.” You don’t want just anyone putting their mouth on your ficus, do you? And “phalanges.” If someone touched your phalanges without your permission, wouldn’t you feel violated? Or “Orangina,” which is maybe the worst name for a beverage ever, no matter how good Orangina tastes flowing down your throat. Similarly, the 12th largest river in the world, the Mekong in Southeast Asia, leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I can very much imagine some 14-year-old boy telling his buddies that he, like, totally saw Ashley’s mekongs. The Crow Collection of Asian Art doesn’t do much to clean up my deviant mind with the name of their latest exhibit, Touching the Mekong. I’ll thank you to back up off my Mekong, if you don’t mind. Of course, it’s a photography exhibit, so they probably don’t want you putting your hands all over their Mekong, anyway. Fifty black-and-white photos taken in Southeast Asia by Andrea Baldeck will be on display Friday through July 9 at 2010 Flora St. DFW International Community Alliance offers a preview from 5 p.m to 9 p.m. Thursday as part of its International DFW Week 2006 celebrations.
