A day trip to Denton is in order. You haven’t really been back to appreciate all it has to offer in a while — you’ve got fond memories, sure, but it’s been too long since you’ve visited your favorite old haunts or checked out what’s new and exciting. As you’re putting your list of landmarks together, leave a slot for Texas Woman’s University’s East & West Galleries, located in the Department of Visual Arts at 300 Texas St. The dual galleries showcase contemporary artists from around the country, focusing on visually arresting work that adds to conversation about our cultural and social framework. Their latest exhibitions are Jeannie Hulen’s Made in the U.S.A. and Shalene Valenzuela’s Follow the Pattern, both open through February 12. Hulen’s multimedia works take on notions of consumerism and gender conventions, incorporating “cute” pieces of ribbon and fabric to create a visual distraction from both sexualization and politicization. Valenzuela’s ceramic sculpture uses common objects and retro imagery to create narratives on consumer culture and gender. Her series of painted blenders are Kitchen-Aid masterpieces. Show up from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday the 21, for an artists reception for both exhibitions, or just visit the galleries during normal business hours from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays or Saturdays by appointment.
