By now we all know better than to trust a vegetarian, but 20 years ago it took a visionary Italian director named Claudio Fragasso and a little movie shot in rural Utah to set us all straight. Like zombie-movie indictments of corporate greed or the slasher flicks that warned us about underage sex, Troll 2 is a nail-biter with a message: Just because they’re vegetarians, doesn’t mean goblins won’t eat your children. Showing how the burlap sack-wearing, green goo-spewing little bastards pull this off is one of the film’s big achievements, though the reasoning behind why there are goblins, and not trolls, in Troll 2 is still kind of a mystery. It’s the kind of movie-making miscarriage that can only come, zen-like, when great ambition and hard work meet uniquely misguided talent. While the 2009 documentary about Troll 2‘s cult-status rebirth, Best Worst Movie, shows the Troll 2 cast laughing along with new fandom, Fragasso is still dead serious.
