What do you call someone who can’t run or bike? A duathlete. OK, maybe that’s the bitter runner in me talking, but I just wish cyclists, duathletes and triathletes didn’t have to advertise their lifestyle at every opportunity. Between the Cliff Bar decals on the Nissan XTerras and the Verizon cycling jerseys (hint: if you’re biking around White Rock at 12 mph, nobody thinks a global communications firm is sponsoring you) not to mention the oversized sunglasses, the camel knapsacks and, of course, the Spandex, you guys don’t exactly fade into the background. But anyone planning on competing in the Summer Solstice Duathlon deserves a free pass. Anyone running two miles, biking the 9.3 miles around the lake and running another two miles in June in Texas has a right to show off. The Summer Solstice Duathlon, Duathlon Relay and 5K Run/Walk takes place 7:30 a.m. Sunday at the Bath House at White Rock Lake. Visit thrustonracing.com.
