Whether through dancing and singing or with passionate and forbidden love affairs, cinema–in this case, the genres of film musical and romantic drama–has been entertaining audiences for decades. Films make you laugh and they make you cry. They make you want to dance, break into song and fall in love all over again…and Texas Theatre’s presentation of Jacques Demy’s 1964 film The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is no exception. The film tells the story of a French mechanic named Guy and an umbrella shop attendant named Genevieve. Genevieve wants to marry Guy but her mother disapproves and Guy is set to leave on a two-year tour of combat in Algeria. When Genevieve discovers she is pregnant with Guy’s child, she must choose whether to wait for him to return or accept a marriage proposal from a well-to-do diamond merchant. Categorized as a cinematic opera, this romantic yet tragic musical is a five-time Oscar nominated film and stars Nino Castelnuovo and Catherine Deneuve. The screening takes place 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Texas Theatre, 231 W. Jefferson Blvd. For more information call 214-948-1546 or visit thetexastheatre.com.
