Psst, wanna know some real dirt? This is a dark, dank secret. You’ll never believe what investigators have uncovered…right in the backyard. Whether a tiny patch of yard in the city or an acre in the country, the soil under your feet is a unique blend of decaying matter, minerals and living organisms, including things you can see, such as worms and insects, and microscopic dwellers such as bacteria and viruses. And above the soil live many more creatures and plants that you might never notice, unless you get down on their level. Kids ages 5 to 8 can explore a backyard habitat with the Texas Discovery Gardens’ Urban Investigators summer camp, where they’ll uncover the mysteries of composting and learn how to start a compost pile, root through living soil, discover native plants and welcome birds to the urban landscape. The camp runs Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Texas Discovery Gardens, 3601 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in Fair Park. Cost is $180 for garden members, $200 for non-members. Space is limited and reservations are required. Call 214-428-7476, ext. 343, or visit texasdiscoverygardens.org.
