Roller derby’s got something for everyone — theatrics, athleticism, costumes, physical violence, Ellen Page movies and so on and so forth. One thing it doesn’t have a lot of: dudes. Unlike synchronized swimming, guys aren’t expressly forbidden in the annals of roller derby, but the former just doesn’t pack the same punch as the latter, metaphorically speaking. And literally, too, I guess. But Dallas — one of the first cities to jump into the roller derby craze of the mid-aughts — is a progressive place for flat-track skating, and, as such, plays host to the Dallas Deception. The Deception is a men’s roller-derby team sanctioned by the Men’s Roller Derby Association, and these dudes are every bit as tough (and tattooed) as the women’s teams you’ve come to know and love. The rules are the same as those of women’s roller derby, the bruises are every bit as painful and the eye candy is now equal-opportunity … especially since the Cowboy Capital Rollergirls and the Randall County Roller Dames square off before the Dallas Deception take on the Twin City Terrors Saturday. Doors open at 7 p.m. at the Lone Star Indoor Sports Center, 1800 Shady Oaks Drive in Denton. Tickets are $10 at deceptionderby.com.
Sat., Aug. 18, 7 p.m., 2012
