Worth A Shot

It’s not as if aspiring photographers unwrap gallery shows and feature spreads for their 18th birthdays. It usually takes years of cultivating talent, creating a series and generally busting ass in the art world to even get noticed. Prix de 1814 MAGAZINE — 2013, a photography contest, could change that. One still has to have the talent and ass-busting drive, but a single photograph could lead to the glory of the notice moment. Three winners and 20 finalists — chosen by a panel of big-time photographers including American shuttersmith Henry Horenstein and Dallas-based Geof Kern — will win publication in a special issue of 1814 MAGAZINE and a pop-up gallery showing, opening 6 p.m. Friday at 2650 Main St. 1814 MAGAZINE aims to encourage all artists to “explore their creativity and preserve the culture of photography.” It’s a fine challenge put forth by an absolutely stunning arts and culture publication (you know, the limited-edition sort you should save on a shelf for future reads).
