Ride animals that really do not like to be ridden, tie up other animals at unnecessary speeds and then dodge around more barrels than Mario in Donkey Kong. This is what the 55th season of the Mesquite ProRodeo Series is all about. Well, that and the $21,000 prize at the end of the season. Until then, cowboys and cowgirls face off for points competing in this traditional Western sport. If you are longing to see a real Texas rodeo, but don’t want to deal with the real Texas summer, fear not. Mesquite’s arena is enclosed and air conditioned. This family-friendly event also includes face painting, pony rides and a petting zoo. There are clowns too, but let’s be real. Those dudes are just as likely to freak kids out as anything. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Mesquite ProRodeo, 1818 Rodeo Drive, Mesquite. Tickets start at $10.

Fri., July 20, 6:30 p.m., 2012
