We are perpetually lucky with the quality of production given to opera in Dallas, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t curious how performances are put together elsewhere. As part of the Dallas Opera’s Baritones and Beach Balls summer educational series, you’re invited to enjoy a classic opera tale the way Puccini intended it: with popcorn and/or Milk Duds. The Turnadot Project shows the ins and outs of attempting to present a masterpiece of Italian opera in China. A year after Zubin Mehta conducts a show-stopper offering of Turnadot in Florence, he sets out to give it a nine-gig run in Beijing — only there the scale is magnificently magnified. The cast measures into the hundreds; costumes and props are based on the Ming Dynasty; opulence abounds. But will local officials, unpredictable weather and other wild cards prevent Mehta’s legacy production? You’ll have to attend Monday night’s screening to know.
