If your main exposure to Thai culture involves spicy fried rice at a place with vases of plastic orchids at every table, then you’re doing it wrong. The colorful, mostly-Buddhist and cheerful customs of the people of Thailand are downright heartwarming for us jaded Americans—and the food is just the right combination of Southeast Asian flavors, combining spicy with sweet, fishy with flavor, crunchy textures with soft noodles. It’s a paradise of aromas and tastes, and it’s yours for the sampling at the first ever Thai Culture and Food Festival, brought to you by The Thai Community Center of North Texas. From 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. Saturday, May 24 and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 25, the Buddhist Center of Dallas, 8484 Stults Road, opens its grounds for a two-day free festival that spills over with Thai cultural offerings that include traditional dance, music, and Muy Thai (martial arts/boxing) demonstrations. Cuisine from all four regions of Thailand will be available for between $1 and $7, and you’ll even get a shot at trying a bowl of exotic (but delicious) chicken feet soup. A Thai marketplace will operate all weekend, selling artisan goods and clothing. And finally, the Buddhist Center will open its doors to the public for the first time in 30 years, offering guided temple tours throughout the weekend. For specifics on the tours and for other information, head to thaifestdallas.com.
Sat., May 24, 11 a.m.-9 p.m.; Sun., May 25, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., 2014
