If someone were to propose the idea of a progressive symphonic metal band with dozens of touring members, elaborate synchronized light shows and pyrotechnics that rival any Kiss concert, it might sound like a pretty cool idea. Now, if someone told you that this band would perform mostly Christmas songs, you might change your mind, laugh or even slap the person delivering the news with a fish. However, once you’ve heard Trans-Siberian Orchestra actually pull off this bizarre conceptual feat, the power of the resulting music is undeniable. The pumped-up orchestral interpretations of traditional Christmas music mixed with classical selections and even–wait for it–a song about Dr. Seuss’ infamous Grinch, make for a one-of-a-kind experience. This group is definitely a phenomenon best appreciated live, as TSO never fails to immerse the concertgoer in full-on audio-visual bombast that sticks to the ribs of your mind like a giant cup of sonic eggnog.
