October is the ninth annual Art Beyond Sight Awareness Month, which is a yearly opportunity for libraries, museums, schools and communities to consider and address the issue of access to the world of art for the blind and visually impaired. All over the country, institutions are hosting events and programs that will educate the public and focus on interaction with, and feedback from, blind and visually impaired patrons. The Dallas Museum of Art, 1717 N. Harwood St., is offering a variety of programming of this nature throughout October, including a family art workshop at 11 a.m. Saturday called How to See Art with Your Eyes Closed, which will explore how to experience works of art with all the senses. Artist Leslie Ligon, who creates Braille fashion jewelry, will lead the workshop in the galleries, followed by an art-making activity in the art studio. Children must be at least 4 years old to attend. The workshop is free for members and $10 per family for nonmembers. Reservations are required, so be sure to register in advance by calling 214-922-1312. For more information about the workshop and other Art Beyond Sight Awareness Month activities, visit dallasmuseumofart.org. To learn more about Leslie Ligon's art, go to braillejewelry.blogspot.com.
