Editor's Note, 5/6/2025, 11:48 a.m.: This article has been updated to reflect the correct departure time of Cathay Pacific's inaugural flight to Hong Kong.
Hong Kong-based airline Cathay Pacific recently launched its first nonstop passenger flight between Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Hong Kong International Airport (HKG). The inaugural trip departed on Thursday, April 24, at 10:55 p.m., spanning 8,123 miles over its 16-hour flight time.
As Cathay’s first major hub in the Southern U.S. and the only nonstop route in the state to Hong Kong, Texas travelers will now enjoy increased access to destinations across mainland China and Southeast Asia. The route launch marks a major milestone in North Texas' continued journey to establish itself as a worldwide aviation hub. It’s also a significant investment in DFW’s Asian population, one of the fastest-growing across all U.S. metropolitan areas.
The flight route, which runs four times weekly out of DFW, is intended to attract a multicultural audience from across Texas, the Southern U.S., and other countries, according to Cathay Pacific officials who recently gathered at the Bowie House hotel in Fort Worth to celebrate the milestone.
Lavinia Lau, chief customer and commercial officer, said at the event that they hope to attract passengers who are not just from DFW, but coming from other parts of the U.S. as well as Central and South America.
According to the U.S. International Trade Administration, inbound travel to the U.S. from Asia dropped 3.4% in March compared to 2024. Additionally, the National Travel and Tourism Office reported that international arrivals from China were down nearly 1% in what Wolfgang Georg Arlt, CEO of the China Outbound Tourism Research Institute, called the “Trump Slump.”
However, the airline’s new tariff monitoring task force hasn’t yet observed a significant impact on flight bookings, and Lau remained optimistic on outbound American travel, especially during summer holidays.
“This new flight will enhance broader air connectivity for customers on both sides of the globe,” said Steve Johnson, vice chair and chief strategy officer of Fort Worth-based American Airlines, during the airline’s launch event on April 27. “We also know that flights like these enable the expansion of trade and tourism with immense benefits accruing to the communities we serve in Hong Kong and here in the Metroplex.”
Round-trip business class tickets start at around $7,000, though budget travelers can find economy seats for $1,050 on select flights through May. Tickets are now open for booking.
